YOUTH MARDI GRAS INDIAN TRIBE
RED FLAME HUNTERS
The mission of the Red Flame Hunters Tribe Mardi Gras Indian Tribe is to preserve, promote and teach the traditions of the historically black neighborhoods of New Orleans.
Our youth and young adult tribe focuses on teaching traditions of the Black Masking Indians and Secondline Club Culture to local youth, and give them the opportunity to share the culture through performances and parades with the larger New Orleans community and beyond.
Now in our 10th year, the Red Flame Hunters are the oldest established youth-focused Mardi Gras Indian Tribe. We add to the greater community of neighborhood-tradition focused groups by reaching young people who are interested in the culture. The Red Flame Hunters are open to any youth who is interested in joining.
The tribe has masked consecutively for 10 years and has partnered with local and national entities for performances and teaching opportunities including; The Ogden Museum (New Orleans), HONK! Fest (Boston), Jazz Fest (New Orleans), The Grammy Museum (Mississippi), Essence Festival (New Orleans), and private performances for conferences, weddings, and more.
Our aim is to give our young members an opportunity to do something creative and productive with their time outside of school. Whether we are masking on Mardi Gras Day, performing for a wedding or conference group or conducting a beading workshop, our young members are encouraged to use their voices and talents to develop skills they will need in their adult lives. Leadership, teamwork, pride and self-expression are rooted into everything we do.
